My brother is brilliant

I was talking to my brother today. He interviews people for jobs and coaches people in the work place. I was talking about the value of being able to dress down.

I like jeans and a t-shirt.

He taught me something.

It doesn't matter what I think when other people are making the decisions.

Thinking about getting a new suit, maybe by Patrick Grant.

Though, I suppose that when people say they dress up for themselves, they are telling the truth too... because
  1. it can make you feel good on its own and
  2. it can make people value you more, if not love you....
F Schumacher's four fields of knowledge are relevant to this:
  1. How do I see myself?
  2. How do you see me?
  3. How do you see yourself?
  4. How do I see you?
My brother's brilliant.

He helps me see things differently.

Time laying heavily

Time seems to be an issue for all of us.

Been looking for an issue to get politically active about but cannot devote the time to it yet.

I am picking up litter on the way to my favourite outdoor spot in Sheffield though.

Not meant to be facetious, just an example of doing something if not everything.

I guess co-ordinated activity by all of us, a little each, is the answer.

Just had one of those moments:

I was shaving, cos the ten-o'clock-in-the-morning-shadow had some grey in it.

I was thinking about something else (my nephew playing ice hockey in Sheffield today) and I went to squirt the shaving gel into my hand.

I was holding it the wrong way round and it hit me in face... Happy days.

7 habits

Covey's 7 habits, over 10 million copies sold (and counting), so shouldn't be news to anyone.

Only one approach of many.

Indeed having only one probably isn't sensible...would be a protocol rather than a flexible pathway.

Private victory
  • Be proactive
  • Begin with the end in mind
  • Put first things first
Public victory
  • Think win/win
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  • Synergize
Renewal
  • Sharpen the saw

Variation on them others

...adapted from Plato and a Platypus, Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes, Cathcart and Klein:

Tom: Ed, I'm calling from the motorway on my new mobile.

Ed: Be careful, Tom. They've just said on the radio there is some nut driving the wrong way on the motorway.

Tom: One nut? Hell, Ed, there are hundreds of them!

Build-a-bear rage

Had some build-a-bear rage today: Wanted to tear it apart and rip its stuffing out...

No, actually, I was persuaded, in the interests of them having a good time, to take my girls into a Build-a-bear shop (it's quite a nice shop, as far as shops go, not as nice as Fossil or the Apple store, but quite a nice shop) and lo and behold money started leaking out of my pocket without so much as a by your leave.

Had to abandon my own shopping. But maybe that is a good thing.

Dummies meeting

Dummies meeting is a great game. The rules are simple, everyone agrees to play. No talking. First one to talk is a silly billy.

What transpires is the following, in chronological order (at least in my trial of one, this is what transpired, I'd like to think it is a regular pattern as long as you don't play it too often, when some deviancy might creep in) :
  1. A bit of peace and quiet.
  2. Some hilarious efforts at sign language.
  3. Someone farts.
  4. Post-fart giggles.
  5. The dominant person tries to get the others to do something (like put the dishes in the dishwasher).
  6. The others do start doing this.
  7. Someone tries to pause the game so that they can get something off their chest.
  8. What they get off their chest is that they think that one good turn deserves another (some chocolate from the treat cupboard perhaps).
  9. Dominant person reminds others of all the things dominant person does for them, dominant person laughing throughout.
  10. Tears and sulks and storming off.
  11. Peace and quiet again.
